bakerdays| Letterbox Cake Review

Who knew that letterbox cakes existed?

I certainly didn’t until a lovely company called bakerdays contacted me last week and asked if they could send Penelope a birthday cake in return for an honest review.

Whilst browsing through the array of designs on the website, I struggled to pick one because they were all so amazing. I also had the option of asking them to customise, which I had contemplated until I seen the Llama unicorn cake.

Penelope is unicorn and llama obsessed so it seemed like the perfect choice and we chose to have it personalised with her name.

They had a large selection of flavours including gluten and dairy free, but we chose the vanilla as that’s her favourite.

Not sure on how these things worked I waited patiently and a few days later it was popped through my letterbox. THROUGH THE LETTERBOX. I couldn’t believe it. It was presented in the most gorgeous little tin, carefully packed and absolutely beautiful.

We have the 5inch cake, which is perfect to send as a gift to someone, and where it may look small it was happily split between the four of us and there is still a bit left over.

The cake itself was fluffy and moist and full of lovely vanilla flavour, topped off with just the right amount of jam and butter cream.

It is one of the tastiest cakes we’ve had for a while and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

Penelope thought it was absolutely delicious and was excited to open it when it arrived.

I was really pleasantly surprised with the whole experience and would 100% buy from here and recommend it to others.

I think it’s an innovative idea. It’s something a little bit unique that you can send to someone on their birthday or other occasion, and at such a great price, who could say no!

Bravo to bakerdays and thanks so much for letting us review this for you.

I’m Back!

Wow, it was like travelling through time looking through my old blog posts, I only ever intended to take a short break and here we are 4 years later!

Like with everything life got in the way, I’ve since had another baby and moved 300 miles away from Newcastle to Kent to be with my partner Joe. Who I met on Xbox but that’s a story for another time..

So I thought I’d do a basic introduction post again as you’ll all have forgotten me by this point.

I’m Sam, Mother of 3 beautiful children.

Harri is 8, Penelope is 6 and Fraser is 6 months old. Partner to Joseph and we live in Chatham, Kent.

I’m a self taught photographer, still learning the ropes but have just recently set up my own business ‘Penelope Ophelia Photography’ which is named after my daughter due to taking my diploma in dark room photography whilst I was pregnant with her.

Currently specialising in family photography and product photography, and my idea is to be affordable to everyone whether it be families or small businesses.

‘Why start your blog back up after such a long time?’

I hear you, it’s been ages but I did really used to enjoy it. I’m trying to get back into the swing of things and doing more things for myself, I had contemplated deleting and starting again but I think it’s nice to leave the old posts so you can see how much my interests have changed over time.

I’ve also gained more of a following on Instagram as of late, and I generally like interacting with other parents and brands, I think a blog is the next step to add to my profile and I’ve missed writing and reviewing on a bigger platform.

Interests?

Photography obviously.

Still completely obsessed with interior design and over the next year we’re buying the house and lots of work needs doing. So there will be updates on that when the wheels are set in motion.

Very into movies, series. Basically a Netflix pro, if you want a recommendation check out my highlights on Instagram, although that also needs an update but there isn’t much I haven’t seen!

Always looking for new things to watch so if you have any of your own recommendations, throw them my way.

Huge learn through play advocate, especially sensory toys so I’ll be posting about that quite a bit.

Kids fashion, which has been a recent thing really. We’re brand reps for several small companies on Instagram and it’s all stemmed from that. We are massive supporters of small businesses and try to only buy from insta/Etsy shops when we can.

This is also how the product photography started and the companies have all been an amazing help and support. But we will go into that later too.

You can still expect reviews from me, we have been lucky over the past few months to have been gifted some items in exchange for honest reviews and photographs and this is a great platform to do that on.

So.. I think we’re all caught up. Bit of a boring one to start with but felt it needed doing.

Real techniques brushes review 💕💕

Not so long ago, I only ever used a very basic sponge to apply my foundation, and a cheap brush to apply powder/blush/bronzer.

It wasn’t until I entered the world of contouring that I started to purchase different types of brushes for each individual step. The difference I have found is massive!

I first purchased the Real Techniques Core kit. Alongside a few different contour pallets. I’ve found they have worked best with the Makeup Revolution Cover and conceal cream contour pallets.

The brushes are lovely though, soft and never loose bristles. Easy to clean and easy to apply makeup. I have my own ways of doing things so I know that I’m not using the brushes for the right things but they work well for me!

Also the Real techniques Expert Face brush is by far the best brush I have ever used. I use it too apply my foundation (currently using Estée Lauder double wear). It goes on perfectly and blends beautifully.

The only brush from Real Techniques that I haven’t liked is the sculpting brush. For me I personally think it’s too hard to sculpt. It’s also quite chunky so doesn’t work well with some of my smaller powder contour kits (current favourite is Seventeen or collection). So I’m disappointed I bought that. Because it doesn’t get used at all.

Overall I absolutely love them. I still have a few more that I want from the original range. And I have a few of the bold metals brushes and also the fibre collection on my Christmas list!  The bold metals are more expensive, but they look amazing and I’ve heard great things about them!

So if you are looking for inexpensive starter brushes to build your collection these are the ones I would suggest!

Hope everyone is well, sorry I haven’t been around for a while. Summer holidays were manic and it’s just finding the time to get back into the swing of things!

Thanks for reading. Leave a comment down below if you use any of the Real Techniques range and what you think of them!

Mini lush Haul 😍😍

Morning!

I was super excited that I checked Lush online at the weekend, as some of the products that were Oxford street exclusives had been made available for purchase 😀

Sadly I couldn’t afford to get all of them this week, with the run up to Xmas we are obviously getting all the presents in, but I did get the main ones I wanted to try! YAY

So here’s what I ordered:

The Comforter Shower Cream

The comforter bubble bar is my absolute favourite. Smells like sherbet 💕💕 can’t wait to try this.

Pink flamingo reusable bubble bar

Smells like a summery cocktail! I must admit I was attracted to this just because simply it was a flamingo 😏

Frozen Bath bomb

One for the kids! I always buy them something in my hauls and have been desperate to get this one.

Experimenter Bath bomb

Just because it’s so colourful!! Looks amazing.

Intergalactic Bath bomb

Smells divine and looks beautiful!

Will be doing a separate blog post to review about these in the coming weeks! So keep an eye out.

Also while I’m here, a special thanks to my good friend Rhi, who sent me this beautiful Gift set from Lush last week.

I hadn’t tried either of the products before but they smell absolutely amazing! The soap leaves a lasting smell on my skin for ages!

If you have tried any of them let me know what you thought in the comments below!

Thanks for reading.

July Favourites 💕💕💕

I feel like this month has been SO long. More than likely because the summer holidays have started and we haven’t been able to get out much!

Kids have been attached to my hip almost constantly, hence the lack of blogging. I hadn’t anticipated that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with my one blog a day routine. So currently in just trying to get one up as often as I can!

So! This months favourites.

Primark Candles

After seeing a few of my favourite bloggers mention them on some of their posts, I grabbed a couple to try when I was there a few weeks ago.

I bought 3 in total. Two of the 3 wick ones and a single wick.

They smell amazing! And I love the presentation of the 3 wicks that are in tins.

The tins were £3.50 and the single candle was £2. Well worth the money in my opinion! Not only are they are bargain, but they look nice and smell great.

Scentsy Warmer

After being sent a warmer to trial for a blog post. I loved it so much that I bought my own! For those of you that haven’t read my scentsy blog, these are basically an electric wax burner. So no need for tea lights! You just plug them in. And pop a wax melt on top.

The smell is amazing! And there’s a huge range of scents and warmers to choose from. Check out my blog for details on where to purchase.

I chose the Bali, for obvious reasons and I adore it.

Mandala Wall Hanging

Purchased from India only last week and it’s arrived already! Urban outfitters are charging around £40 each for something similar. And as you will have seen from my recent post, we will soon be decorating our bedroom. So we have started to buy bits and pieces.

This was £13.99 on eBay, with free postage. I was expecting it to take ages with it being from India but arrived in just under a week. It’s absolutely enormous!

I have ordered a few others, and have some more in my watch list as I’m not sure how many I will need as I’m recovering my blanket box and the seat of my chair. All in different colours of course.

Excuse the picture, I obviously won’t be hanging them till we have decorated, so I’ve put it on my bed to show you.

Estée Lauder Double wear foundation
Not really sure why I put off purchasing this for so long, mainly the price tag because I usually spend no more than £10 on a foundation.

Everyone knows my love for drugstore makeup brands but I just had to try it and WOW what a difference.

Although I personally find it too heavy for basic day to day, it holds up to everything that it promises and I have used it an awful lot.

It lasts all day, to the point I find myself scrubbing it off my face at the end of the day. My face never feels dry, the coverage is amazing. It’s an all round winner.

However I think this shade is too dark for me, fine for when I have fake tan on but not without, so will be trying a different shade next time!

Barry M – Make me blush cream

Just recently I was talking to a friend about the memory I had of being a little girl and watching my mum use her lipstick on her cheeks as rouge. And this product totally reminded me of that, so that’s why I bought it!

They have a few different shades, but I like bright pink on my cheeks. Goes on lovely and I just blend it in with a brush!

Lush – Gay is ok soap

Smells fruity, spicy and gives a bit a of twinkle. I absolutely LOVE it. But that’s nothing new, there doesn’t seem to be much that I don’t love from Lush.

Garnier – Micellar Cleansing water

I have super sensitive skin, so I don’t really have a skin care routine because most products really irritate my face.

However, I purchased this and i absolutely love it. It’s so gentle on my skin, leaves me feeling fresh but also takes my makeup off like a dream!

I use it every morning when I wake up and then use it before bed to take my makeup up.

Glossy box favourite – Teoxane cosmeceuticals – Perfect skin Refiner

I’ve noticed an incredible difference in my skin with this product, so much so that I dug my glossy box information card out to see how much the full sized product is.

😐 It’s £70…. There has to be something similar out there for cheaper?! Does anyone know of a different brand? If not, I really think it’s something I might have to save up for because it’s honestly amazing.

I apply it after I’ve taken all my makeup off and cleansed my skin. It stings a little when I’m applying it but I’ve been told that’s supposed to happen.

My skin already feels more taught and smoother than it has been in a long time!

So that’s Julys favourites! What’s been your favourite products this month? Comment below or link me to your blog so I can read about them!

Thanks so much for reading.

Toy review Tuesday!

Fisherprice Disney Little People

I absolutely adore this range and so do the kids.

We started collecting them last Christmas.

We started with the Disney castle, Ariel carriage and Cinderella carriage.

Then for Penelope’s birthday added in the Cinderella dance floor and the Tangled tower.

As with all Fisherprice toys, they are sturdy, thick plastic. Colourful and fun, pretty much indestructible which is a big thing to look for In this house! But because they are Disney related the kids seem to show a lot more interest.

And even though these were purchased for Penelope, Harri really enjoys them too. And it’s not often that he’s bothered with toys at all, unless they are sensory related, it’s also go them kind of playing together side by side. Which is a huge step for Harri.

What I find great about this range, is that there is so much too choose from. Meaning that I can purchase bits to add to her collection every birthday/Xmas etc.

We have already got her a few bits for Xmas, including the Aurora and the fairies package, Clip clop horse track and the Aladdin/jasmine magic carpet.

Yes obviously, some of the toys are quite large. So storage can sometimes be an issue. Penelope’s room is super tiny, but currently we are managing well. I can’t say I will be saying the same come Christmas time!

If you are struggling for ideas on Christmas presents, I absolutely recommend anything from this range. There is a massive amount to choose from (try Ebay for some of the rarer bits) and any small child that loves Disney will love these!

Thanks for reading lovelies!

Selfie Saturday : My makeup

Morning lovelies!

I thought I would give you a quick run through of what makeup I’m wearing today. After purchasing a few bits this week, I’ve been gradually adding them and changing things amongst my normal routine.

I also dyed my hair this week! I’m a little bit sad, it didn’t take long to get blonde but it has damaged my hair quite badly. I only wanted to go blonde so that I could go a gun mental grey. Who knew going grey was such hard work? Even the hairdressers tried but the toner was washing out within a week. Too much money and still didn’t get the outcome that I wanted. So I’ve gone a nice brown instead! This is what I used :

So, my makeup today consists of the following:

Maybelline Baby skin – Instant fatigue Blur

I’m not sure if I like this yet, I’ve been using the green tube (instant pour eraser) for a few months now and it’s a totally different texture. However my makeup does go on well over it, so I’m going to persevere. I apply this to my full face as a primer.

Estée Lauder – Double wear – Fresco

I bit the bullet and purchased it this week. So many people have said such great things about the coverage that I just couldn’t contain myself any longer. I’m a big advocate in drugstore makeup. I’ve been using Maybelline better skin for a while now and I love that. But the coverage I’ve got from double wear is really quite amazing. The price makes my eyes water though. But from what I’ve used so far, I’m happy to pay it!

Maxfactor – Pan stik – Noveau Beige

I use this as a concealer not foundation. So I apply it anywhere I need it. Usually under my eyes and then blemishes.

Makeup Revolution contour pallets – light, medium/dark

I absolutely love these. They are only £6 per pallet in superdrug. I use the 2 lightest shades for highlighting (see previous review post to see how I highlight and contour my face) and then the 3 darkest shades for contour.

Soap and Glory – Solar Powder

I’m touching pan with this now so need to replace it. I don’t use it as a bronzer really, more like my all over face powder before I apply any contour powder!

MAC – Limited edition Disney’s Malificent – Sculpting Powder

Can’t even explain how excited I am to own this product. They are selling for quite a lot on Ebay with them being no longer available. However, I won this in a bidding for £5.50 😱 that was the starting bid so no one else must have searched for it!

It came in the post yesterday, I’ve been using it to sculpt my cheekbones and basically anywhere where I contour. LOVE it.

Barry M – Make me blush cream

Also bought this week (keep an eye out for my weekly purchases blog later)

I’ve asked Sean for the Makeup revolution cream blush pallets for Xmas. So in the meantime wanted to try a few others. I love this one, goes on super easy and it’s a really pretty pink colour. Blends easy with my brushes too.

Collection work the colour – eyebrow kit

I use the black mostly, but this is still by far the best eyebrow kit I’ve used. And it’s a steal at 2.99!

Maybelline – The Rocket Mascara

Still my absolute favourite although I have bought a different one to try this week. But I’m pretty sure this will be my staple mascara forever!

Pop Beauty – Sooty black eyeliner

No point in taking a photo as its nearly finished which shows how much I’ve loved this product. It was in my first glossy box. And I absolutely adore it.

Kate Moss Rimmel – Nude collection shade 40

Everything I could ever want from a nude lipstick!

The finished look

Superdrug Haul 💕💕💕

I went a little crazy in superdrug this week, I don’t know whether it was excitement or anger or a combination of both.

You see I went for the full new nude range of lipsticks by Kate Moss/ Rimmel. Only too find that they only had 2 shades left. 😑 I was not amused. So I had a mini spree.

What I got:

Zoella –

So these few bits are actually to put away for Xmas. They are on special offer at the minute in superdrug and I really wanted some of the bits, so I bought them and gave them to Sean to put away for me.

I don’t use moisturisers really, apart from soap and glory or Burts Bees, so I didn’t get those. But I did get the following:

Soak Opera – bath soak and shower cream

Let’s Spritz – Fragrance Body Spray  (new range)

Fizz Bar – Fragranced bath frizzers

Fresh Fizz – Fragranced bath Fizz (new range)

Scrubbing me softly – Smoothing body scrub (new range)

It all smells wonderful! And I can’t wait to try it. I’ve only just recently came across Zoella on you tube through a recommendation from a friend. And I’ve fallen in love with her. So it only made sense to go and buy some of her bits to try!

Garnier – Micellar Cleansing Water

St Ives – Apricot Scrub (blemish fighting)

MUA – Pro base conceal and brighten kit and Prime and conceal

Kate Moss Rimmel Nude range – shades 40 and 43

These were the only ones available in my local shops, so I nabbed them as they were the only 2 left. Obviously I love any type of nude lipstick. So I do want the whole collection. I’ve searched them down below. As you can see shade 40 (top) is super light.

Real Techniques – Sculpting brush

Most of these products I chose because I had seen people recommend them in reviews after their hauls. Some of the things I just wanted to try anyway!

Will be reviewing them once I work them into my daily routines, but from the items I’ve used for a couple of days, I’m already really pleased with.

Thanks again for reading! Let me know in the comments If you have tried any of these and if you Liked them or not!
